UF Radiation Oncology Breast Team Launches MyRiskBreastCancer.Com
For Breast Cancer Awareness Month, October, the University of Florida Radiation Oncology Breast Cancer Team launched a website and app to help individuals assess their risk of developing breast cancer. The site and online risk calculator, myriskbreastcancer.com, is unique in that it reviews risk factors for women, men and transgender individuals. The digital tool reviews age, family history, past screenings, and more to determine a person’s risk level.
“This work aims to spread information about the importance of breast cancer screening and the nuances of screening recommendations for individuals at higher risk in a user-friendly and simple yet comprehensive format. In addition to the risk calculator, there are vignettes about people with various risk factors to assist in understanding why recommendations vary for certain individuals. Information on technique for breast self-exam, answers to common questions and resources for obtaining screening is provided. It has been exciting to work with this passionate and creative team of people who care so deeply about the health of our communities,” said Julie Bradley, MD, MHCDS, Associate Professor, Department of Radiation Oncology at the University of Florida and Breast Cancer Program Director at the UF Health Proton Therapy Institute.
Matthew Culbert, MD, (University of Florida, Gainesville; resident in Radiation Oncology) developed the technical and visual components of the app and website. The team further consisted of breast cancer specialists Dr. Bradley, Teena Burchianti, APRN, Eric Brooks, MD, MHS, Assistant Professor (UF Health Proton Therapy Institute) and Oluwadamilola Oladeru, MD, MA, MBA, Assistant Professor (University of Florida, Gainesville), who provided assistance with content given their expertise in the field.
The website includes information about breast cancer, breast cancer screening and resources for finding care and financial assistance. The risk calculator is free online or in an app form for smart phones.
