Congratulations! Cancer survivorship care begins after completing radiation therapy and is all about helping to improve your health and quality of life.

UFPTI cancer survivorship

Survivorship care after cancer treatment requires routine follow-ups which are important to provide education, monitor for post-treatment side effects and implement interventions when needed as well as coordinate personalized follow-up care and cancer screenings with other specialists.

Your doctor will follow up with you as long as is needed. When appropriate, your care may be transferred to one of our advanced care nurse practitioners who specializes in cancer survivorship care.

While proton therapy reduces post-treatment side effects, it is still important to ensure continuous monitoring for any health issues for each individual. Most follow-up appointments are brief, but important to maintaining appropriate and personalized care.

For the 97% of our patients who are on the Outcome Tracking Clinical Trial, what you tell us about your health and wellness for five, 10, or even more years following treatment is helpful in understanding long-term patient outcomes for cancers treated with proton therapy. This data is helping to shape the future of cancer care.

Meet your survivorship team

Our advanced care nurse practitioners are experts in radiation oncology and cancer survivorship. If your doctor decides that you are doing well after treatment and have no major health concerns, they will let you know it is time to begin survivorship care. From there, you will meet with one of our experienced Radiation Oncology Nurse Practitioners.

This expert survivorship team supports patients after treatment for breast cancer, prostate cancer, head and neck cancer, brain tumors and other central nervous system diagnoses. After care is transferred by your doctor, our survivorship team will work with you to oversee your ongoing care and answer questions you may have. Your radiation oncologist is a part of your survivorship team and will be available for any concerns.

What to expect after treatment

How often and when follow up visits will be scheduled will depend on each individual and the cancer treated. In general, follow up is scheduled in the first few months following the completion of treatment, a few times in the first year and progressively less often until only an annual follow up is recommended. Ask your doctor when your next follow up is recommended.

Contact the center directly at any time if you have any concerns about your health after treatment has ended. Use your secured patient portal through MyUFHealth.

Radiation side effects vary greatly depending on the anatomical location of the treatment, the technology, and the combined cancer interventions patients receive before, during and after treatment. Skin changes are the most common side effect from radiation therapy, and typically heal on their own within a few weeks of completing radiation. Survivorship care allows the medical staff to monitor all types of side effects and promote appropriate interventions when necessary.

There is an increasing amount of cancer research supporting the connection between healthy lifestyle choices and preventing a cancer recurrence or development of a second cancer. Some suggestions from the American Cancer Society, www.cancer.org, include: - Stop smoking - Moderate exercise -Maintain a healthy weight - Healthy diet - Adequate sleep - Reduce stress - Maintain healthy blood pressure and cholesterol levels.

Now that you have completed the radiation phase of your treatment, we encourage you to attend support groups and/or reach out to friends and family for support. We understand how normal routines were interrupted during the time you were being treated. Be sure to take time to laugh with friends. Fill your life with things that bring you joy. The American Cancer Society also has many resources for survivorship at https://www.cancer.org/cancer/survivorship.html

Absolutely amazing place. From end to end staff and facility are outstanding. And set a high standard that other such places should try and emulate. Key word “Try” UF Health can be copied but never duplicated. Kudos to whoever does the hiring/training.
