Yes. Our Social Services Department will provide you with interpretation services while you are at our center.  This service is provided through qualified medical interpreters at no cost to you.

Our social workers are experienced, clinical professionals who help patients and their families cope with the day to day challenges associated with their cancer diagnosis and treatment. This includes assistance with practical matters such as housing, transportation, and referrals to cancer-related resources, as well as emotional and psychosocial needs. Professionally trained in counseling, clinical social workers are available to provide short-term counseling free of charge. Our adult social worker can also provide information about advance care planning and advance directives.

 Once you have been accepted as a patient, you will receive a packet containing information about our facility, staff, and proton therapy along with a visa letter.   The letter verifies your appointment at UF Health Proton Therapy Institute and gives an estimate of the time needed for your treatment.  This document can be taken to a U.S. embassy or consulate if you need to apply for a visa. https://visaguide.world/us-visa/renewal/

Arrangements will be made in advance for a car service to pick you up at the airport and take you to the residence where you will be staying while in Jacksonville.  The Social Services team will communicate those details with you early in the planning process.

Travelers checks are not recommended. Therefore, many patients choose to use a credit card while here. If you are going to exchange money, it’s better to do this at your bank prior to your departure.  Remember to call all card providers before you leave to let them know where and when you will be traveling or your cards could be blocked.

Yes.  There will be some down time between the consult day and the treatment start date as it takes approximately two weeks for the development of the treatment plan.  Many patients use this time to check out housing, sightsee or become familiar with the city of Jacksonville. Patients and families can tour the area and enjoy the beaches, Disney World, and other places of interest conveniently located within driving distance of Jacksonville, Florida.

Since most international patients have some time and feel well enough to sightsee while in the state of Florida, renting a car is often the mode of transportation.  Cab service is also available with discounted rates for our patients.  Our Social Services team will assist you with the details of getting to and from treatment and other questions you may have regarding transportation.

If a family member gets injured or becomes ill, there are many walk-in clinics available in Jacksonville that offer on-site lab work, diagnostics and prescriptions. If hospitalization becomes necessary, UF Health Proton Therapy Institute is affiliated with UF Health Jacksonville located on the campus adjacent to our facility. You may want to consider purchasing travel medical insurance for you and your family just in case any emergency medical needs arise during your visit.

The length of treatment depends on the diagnosis although it is typically six to eight weeks.  International patients are in Jacksonville for up to three months.
